The city wall was secured by bastions. These are structures that project from the line of the fortification wall. There were several bastions along the city wall, and one could always see from one to the next. In this way, the area immediately in front of the wall, which the defenders could not see from the parapet, could be observed from the side and, if necessary, reached with weapons.

At the northernmost tip of the "Ilmenau Island," where the Ilmenau River and the Lösegraben canal meet again, a bastion once stood.

Today, a small park with a playground occupies this site.

The bastion on the street of the same name was added to the old city fortifications around 1644 in the manner of the later so-called Vauban fastening system. The old hexagonal layout of the bastion is still recognizable. Today, the area of the former bastion with lime trees is overgrown and invites you to linger.
