On March 12, 1834, the Bochum merchant Georg Cramer found a nine-inch thick coal seam about 100 Lachter southwest of Heiermann zu Stiepel's house, at the exit of a mountain ravine that opened into the meadow, and appealed to the Royal Prussian Mining Authority. A gorse in bloom near where it was found prompted Cramer to register this suspicion under the name of Peony Flower.

A discovery of coal under the rootstock of a cleared beech tree (approx. 1 km north-east of the current tunnel mouth) prompted the Bochum merchant Georg Kramer to apply to the Royal Prussian Mining Authority for a prospecting of the exposed hard coal seam in March 1834. A gorse bush blooming near where it was found gave the colliery the name "Pentecost flower" (in the 19th century, gorse was popularly known as Pentecost flower). At the same time, the brothers Georg and Heinrich Haarmann reported the finds in Ludwig and Neuftund.
