The first wooden church in Kristinestad was built in 1654-58 on the site where Ulrika Eleonora Church is today, but it burned down on June 16, 1697. Construction of Ulrika Eleonora Church was completed in 1700. The church was renovated and re-consecrated in 1965.
The wooden church with the votive ships hanging from the ceiling is typical of the coastal region. Shipbuilding can also be seen elsewhere in the church, e.g. inside the ceiling structure. The church's old cemetery contains the graves of the old famous families as well as the heroes' graves.
