The museum was built between 1900 and 1905 in the neo-renaissance style. Several collections illustrate the history of the city and its region from the Stone Age to modern times.
A comprehensive archaeological collection from the Bronze and Iron Ages gives us insights into a culture that was able to fully develop in the Haguenau Forest. It is complemented by the Gallo-Roman era with extraordinary objects such as the helmet of the Roman legionnaire.
Several halls are dedicated to the city's history since its foundation in the 12th century.

The Musée historique (Historical Museum) is the town and cultural history museum of the municipality of Haguenau in Alsace (now the Grand Est region, France). The museum has nationally significant holdings in the areas of archaeology, sculpture of the late Middle Ages (ca. 1400–1550) and applied arts.
