A thriving crop of blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) can be seen beneath the barrels near Whiddy Island.
Mussel farming began in Bantry Bay in 1981: from humble beginnings it developed into one of the largest mussel growing areas in Treland, exporting mussels throughout Europe. Originally the mussels were exported live, but today most mussels are processed and packed locally, with the main markets being the UK, Germany, France and Italy.
