The road above is closed; if you want to see a little more, you have to walk a little way up the road embankment.
The tunnels were built between 1935 and 1936 for the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen as a bypass of Reichsstrasse 2 around Eschenlohe. In March 1944, during the Second World War, as part of the underground relocation, production halls with bomb-proof steel gates were built at both portals of the north tunnel and the south portal of the south tunnel for the then Messerschmitt AG to manufacture aircraft parts.
