The Morspoort gate, as it stands today, was constructed as the city expanded westward.
This Morspoort gate, and the Zijlpoort gate on the east side of the city, are the only remaining original city gates of the eight that Leiden once had. The other gates were demolished in the 19th century.

Through the gate, one could walk to the gallows field along the Rhine where the bodies of the executed were hung.
Until 1879, Morsstraat was called Kleistraat or Galgstraat. The section of the Oude Rijn here is aptly called Galgewater.
The current gate was built here in 1611. The city council decided to name the gate after the marshy area on the outskirts of the city, De Morsh.
