The church from the 15th century stands directly on the Weser dike. It was badly damaged by the devastating storm surge in 1962, which is why it is now protected by a sheet pile wall. It is actually called St. Mary's Church, but is also called the “Schifferkirche” by the population, who are very attached to shipping.

Because of the close connection of the population with the shipping the St-Marien church is also called "Schifferkirche".
