The miraculous crucifix, recovered from the sea by the boatmen of Dammes, was already an object of great veneration at the beginning of the 14th century. Every year on the third of July, the famous cross procession passed through the city. From far and near the pilgrims came to worship the cross. During the iconoclasm of 1566, the cross was smashed. A knee fragment of the original cross, is still revered today.
