Large parts of the 15th century city wall are still preserved, including 5 of the 14 towers and one of the two city gates. The late Gothic city church, the rectory and the town hall form the center of the listed city center.

Heldburg was granted town rights on December 2, 1394, the council is documented in 1396 and held the lower courts to a limited extent. As a town, Heldburg received all municipal privileges from Landgrave Balthasar of Thuringia, a significant tax reduction and after a while was even exempted from all information for several years so that the town could expand its city fortifications. Heldburg was fortified in the 16th century.

The town gate is still very well preserved, the sandstone passage, which is still clearly visible, is evidence of a train gate.

Well-preserved city gate of the former city fortifications. If you turn left in front of the city gate towards the Ochsenmauer, you will reach a kind of circular path where you can see other remains of the city wall and fortifications.
