1283 is mentioned as the probable builder of the castle Ludwig de Forest, and in the 14th century the lords of Gleimenhain were the owners. In 1478 the castle was already desolate and went to Hans von Dörnberg. The castle continued to deteriorate, and in 1563 an agreement was reached with the Electorate of Mainz that it would not be rebuilt.

A fairy-tale from the Brother's Grimm
Once upon a time there was an old castle in the middle of a large, thick forest, in which an old woman lived all alone, she was an arch sorceress. During the day she made herself into a cat or a night owl, but in the evening she was properly shaped like a human being again. She could lure the game and the birds, and then she slaughtered, boiled and fried them.
And so forth......
