It is a three-part structure. The palatial main building is built in Neo-Renaissance style. It has three corner towers; the elevated tower at the Gorch-Fock-Wall/Dammtorstrasse intersection carries a golden statue of Mercury. Since the first floor is low as the bel étage, the proportions of the building appear depressed. The building is decorated with several allegorical groups; the sculptures designed by Engelbert Peiffer refer to the postal service, the telephone and the telegraph. The building has four floors and a glass roof added later.
