The city's citizens are proud of their largely preserved medieval city wall with city gates and defensive towers around the historic Villingen city center. Originally, the Villingen city fortifications consisted of the inner city wall, the inner ditch and the outer city wall with a thickness of several meters and an outer ditch. The city wall is now almost completely surrounded by public green spaces with old trees and bushes - affectionately called "facilities" by the people of Villingen.

The Bickentor in Villingen was built around 1260 and is now 18 meters high. The floor plan of the medieval gate is 8 by 11 meters. The monastery chapel of St. Ursula is attached. The monastery has been home to an order of Poor Clares since 1480. In 1782 it became an Ursuline monastery with a girls' school. To this day it is a high school and secondary school. The monastery continued to exist until the summer of 2015 and then closed its doors.

The Bickentor was built around 1260. It was first mentioned in writing in 1344. There were some changes in the 16th and 17th centuries. The front gate, the so-called Bickentor bay window, was built in 1737 and demolished again in 1868. In 1875 the local council passed a resolution to demolish the entire gate, but this was not implemented.
