The late Romanesque-early Gothic building of the three-aisled monastery church of St. Marien in Lehnin is a pillar basilica in the shape of a cross. Its construction began around 1185 and lasted until 1235. It is considered one of the most important brick buildings in the Mark Brandenburg. Friedrich Wilhelm IV commissioned various architects to draw up reports and plans for the restoration of the church, which was destroyed at the time. Reconstruction of the church began in the spring of 1871. It is considered an early masterpiece of modern monument preservation.

When visiting the monastery, it's important to keep in mind that the monastery church is only open to the public during a very limited timeframe. Currently (August 2025), the opening hours during the summer months are as follows:
Monday - Friday: 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday: 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
So be sure to check in advance. We've conveniently placed the visit at the end of our tour.
