Kalamata Fortress was built by the Portuguese in 1540 to ensure Portuguese dominance in the lucrative clove trade. After the Dutch became the dominant power in Maluku, they restored the fortress in 1610. In 1810, the British took over the Spice Islands and with them the fortress. After restoration, Fort Kalamata was inaugurated by the Indonesian government in 1997.
The Kalamata Fortress is designed to resemble the four corners of a compass - with four pointed bastions. Kalamata Fortress is located on the coast overlooking the two islands of Tidore and Maitara.
