The serpent-shaped cross sculpture ('The Brazen Serpent Monument') on Mount Nebo is a symbol of the bronze serpent that Moses created in the wilderness. The sculpture was created by Italian artist Giovanni Fantoni.
Moses was instructed by God to raise a “serpent of bronze” to heal those who looked at it. On the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, Michelangelo painted a mural depicting the Israelites' deliverance from the plague of snakes through the creation of the bronze serpent.

Inscription on the plaque: “Milestones of the sixth mile of the Roman road that connected Esbous (Hesban) with Livias (al-Ramah) in the Jordan Valley. The road, which stretched along the ridge north of Wadi Uyun Mousa, was used by Byzantine pilgrims to get from Jerusalem to the monument to Moses on Mount Nebo.”

The theological basis for this work of art of the "brazen serpent" is handed down to us in the fourth book of Moses in the Torah (the Hebrew Bible, often referred to in Christianity as the Old Testament). The New International Version (NIV) states: "The Lord said to Moses, 'Make a fiery serpent and hang it on a pole. Anyone who is bitten will live if they look at it.'" So Moses made a bronze serpent and hung it on a pole. If anyone was bitten by a serpent and looked at the bronze serpent, they lived. (Numbers 21:8-9)
