"The palace garden is open to everyone for strolling and is an ornament to the city. In addition, the beautiful view that is offered to the stroller ensures pleasant enjoyment."
The garden was framed by several buildings, such as the cavalier house, the orangery and the former stable building with the riding arena, which were built between 1695 and 1710. The palace park was converted into a cultural park in 1963/64. The pond was created, aviaries and a game enclosure were built.

On March 29, 1677, construction of the castle began by Duke Albrecht, who ruled the Duchy of Gotha-Altenburg together with his six brothers. Until the previous year, the seven brothers had held court together at Friedenstein Castle in Gotha, but then went with their wives to the places from which they received their income, because their father, Ernst the Pious, had assigned them partial principalities ("Mutschierungen"), but without dividing the land under imperial law.
