The Chelmos Observatory (Greek: Αστεροσκοπείο Χελμού) is a major astronomical research facility located on the summit of Neraidorachi in the Chelmos mountain range.
It is situated at an altitude of
2,340 meters above sea level. This location was chosen because it is among the darkest places in continental Europe and is hardly affected by artificial light pollution.
The observatory is involved in important international projects:
It was selected by the ESA
as the first optical ground station under the ScyLight program to test laser communication with satellites.
