Denmark took over the maintenance of the roads and received the customs revenue on the goods traffic. Why Denmark? The King of Denmark was also Duke of Schleswig and Holstein at this time. The national affiliation was complicated, however, because the duchies were also part of the German Confederation. After the German-Danish War (1864), the duchies of Holstein, Schleswig and Lauenburg were annexed by Prussia (1867) and combined as the province of Schleswig-Holstein.

With the completion of the new "Altona-Lübecker Chaussee" in 1841, the new "Gewind mail coach" also went into service. It shortened the travel time between Hamburg and Lübeck to just 6 ¾ hours instead of the minimum 12 hours on the previously unpaved route. With the opening of the railway connection in 1865, the steam locomotive gave way to the mail coach. She needs just 1 ½ hours for the same distance.

An old Danish milestone can still be discovered at the junction of the railway cycle path with federal highway 75. These were historic toll stations on the trade route between Hamburg and Lübeck. In the first half of the 19th century, the Danish king, who was ruling here at the time, financed the expansion of the road.
