Schans Halve Maan between former Fort Marie and Fort Zwijndrecht, former defense line to protect Antwerp. Nearby is cafe de Smoutpot, check in advance whether it is open, then definitely take a break here.

The Schans Halve Maan is one of the oldest redoubts around Antwerp and was built together with the Defensive Dike. Unlike the Defensive Dike itself, the redoubt is not accessible.

Historical explanation:
The Schans Halve Maan was built in 1870, together with the Defensive Dike. The redoubt is located approximately in the middle. In 1953, the redoubt was badly damaged by the flood and the inside was dug up to fill sandbags. Victims of the flood were allowed to temporarily build shelter on the freed-up land. There are now four private homes on the site.

A pleasant picnic area. Several benches invite you to relax in a historic setting.

Explanation: In 1953, the fort was severely damaged by a flood, and the interior was excavated to fill sandbags. Flood victims were given permission to build temporary shelters on the vacant land. Private homes now stand on the site. The ramparts surrounding the fort have almost completely disappeared. Only a remnant remains at the bridgehead.
