The cathedral of St. Stephen and St. Sixtus in Halberstadt, a cruciform basilica built from the 13th to the 15th century in the style of northern French Gothic, which today serves as a Protestant church, is considered one of the few large church buildings of the French cathedral scheme in Germany.

The cathedral square, which stretches between the cathedral and the Liebfrauenkirche, is one of those places in the city that were not affected by the war devastation in the Second World War. It was the religious center of Halberstadt, which is why there are hardly any shops here. Even a largely preserved own wall blocked off the entire, significantly elevated area and called Domburg from the rest of the city.
