In 1833 tracks were found in a quarry near Hildburghausen, secured and first described by Friedrich Sickler in 1834. The engraver Carl Barth also made a great effort to secure and evaluate the traces. The merits of both were finally acknowledged by Johann Jakob Kaup in 1835, in which he named the found footprints chirotherium sicklerii and chirotherium barthii.

Original parts of the track plates found at that time are now scattered all over the world in the hands of scientists. As is now known, these are around 240 million year old traces of a primordial dinosaur from the time of the Buntsandstein, which according to current knowledge represents an ancestor of crocodiles and birds (dinosaurs included).
