Scottish wool trading companies existed in Veere as early as the early fifteenth century. In 1541, Veere became the staple for Scottish goods, with wool by far the most important product. Wool was highly sought after in the Flemish cloth industry. Ownership of the Scottish staple meant that wool and linen fabrics, salmon, butter, leather, and hides from Scotland could only be sold in Veere. Factors based in Veere sold the goods on behalf of Scottish merchants.

In the 16th century, Veere became a staple for Scottish goods. Wool was a major export. The Scottish Houses, the "Lammeken" (Lamb House) and "In de Struijs" (In the Struy), are a reminder of the trade ties with Scotland. The houses owe their names to the figures on the gable stones: a lamb and an ostrich. Behind the characteristic facades of the Scottish Houses, you'll now find the Veere Museum.
