In the 16th century it was christened as Place of the Pond because there was a shallow reservoir within it. Then it became the Square of Charity, the University, the Inquisition, the Constitution and finally Plaza Bolívar after the willingness of the legislative power to erect a monument in honor of the liberator from Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru and Bolivia.

Bolívar Square, also known as Congress Square or Inquisition Square, is a square in the Barrios Altos of the historic center of Lima, the capital of Peru, and has existed since the 16th century.
Because it is a park attached to the Congress Building, access is usually restricted, making it more likely to be used for government or congress-sponsored events.
It has a fence, appropriate benches and bins, access for people with disabilities and well-tended gardens. There are neither toilets nor a private parking lot.
