The Kanomlja Water Barriers, locally known as Kanomeljske Klavže, are remarkable historical monuments nestled in the Idrija hills of Slovenia, specifically within the Zgornja Idrijca Landscape Park. Standing at an elevation of approximately 548 meters, these impressive stone masonry structures were once vital for transporting timber to the historic Idrija Mercury Mine. They are situated on the Klavžarica stream, a tributary of the Kanomljica river, a few kilometers east of Vojsko, and are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Idrija mercury mine used to be the second biggest in the world, and needed enormous amounts of timber to operate. The timber was cut on nearby hills, but lacking roads (and efficient means of transportation), the most suitable method to bring it to the mine was floating along natural water routes. The tributaries of Idrijca river do not have that much water, so from the 16th century on engineers constructed "klavže", water barriers, to accumulate water. When the wood was prepared, the barrier was opened and the wood would float down to the "rakes" in Idrija.

Are there any circular hiking routes that include the Kanomlja Water Barriers?

Yes, several circular routes incorporate the Kanomlja Water Barriers. Many hikers combine a visit to the Klavže with longer trails through the surrounding Idrija forests, often connecting to other historical sites or natural viewpoints within the Zgornja Idrijca Landscape Park. These longer routes can range from moderate to challenging, depending on their length and elevation changes.

Is the area around Kanomlja Water Barriers suitable for families with young children?

However, weekends, especially during peak summer months (July and August) and sunny autumn days, can see more visitors. Arriving earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon can help avoid the busiest times. Weekdays generally offer a more tranquil experience.

Is it possible to visit the Kanomlja Water Barriers during winter, and what should I expect?

Visiting the Kanomlja Water Barriers in winter is possible and can offer a unique, serene experience with snow-covered landscapes. However, trails may be snowy or icy, requiring appropriate winter hiking gear, such as waterproof boots and possibly microspikes. Access roads might also be less maintained, so check local conditions before you go. The hydroelectric plant continues to operate, adding to the site's year-round interest.

What kind of parking facilities are available near the Kanomlja Water Barriers?

Can you tell me more about the unique engineering of the Kanomlja Water Barriers?

The Kanomlja Water Barriers are a marvel of 19th-century engineering. Built in 1812-1813, they are stone masonry barriers constructed from limestone and dolomite blocks using Pucolan mortar. With a width of 32.6 meters and a height of 14 meters, they are among the largest of their kind. Their design allowed for the accumulation of water, which, when released, created a powerful surge to transport timber downstream to the Idrija Mercury Mine. A replica of the original opening mechanism is preserved on site, showcasing this ingenious system.

Are there any other historical water barriers (klavže) in the Idrija region worth visiting?

Yes, the Kanomlja Water Barriers are part of a larger system of klavže in the Idrija region, all built to serve the mercury mine. While the Kanomlja Klavže are unique for still being in use (for hydroelectric power), other notable klavže include the Grablje Klavže and the Brusove Klavže. Exploring these sites offers a deeper insight into the region's rich industrial heritage and the innovative solutions developed for timber transport.
