The city's history has been closely linked to the history of the German Navy since its inauguration as the "first German naval port on the Jade" on June 17, 1869. The city is now the largest base of the German Navy, and since the implementation of the Bundeswehr's stationing concept in 2011, it has also been the largest base of the Bundeswehr and one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. Wilhelmshaven is young, even younger than its port. On June 17, 1869, the Prussian King and later Emperor Wilhelm I (1797-1888) in the presence of his Prime Minister Otto von Bismarck and Field Marshal Helmuth von Moltke bestowed his name on the shipyards, locks and quays of the Navy on the Jade Bay.
