Cedar Creek Falls is a beautiful cascade that drops 80 feet into a shimmering pool of water. It's best to visit the falls in the spring or fall, when there is a higher chance of water running.

The falls are located in Cleveland National Forest and there is a permit required for the trail leading up to them, so be sure to plan your hike accordingly!

Hiked Cedar Creek Falls 06/08 …heats up in June. Take plenty of water, 34 oz was not enough. The ground temp was 124 degrees. Permits needed and hikers are checked in and checked out. Beautiful views of the Falls make it worth it!

    310m

Embark on an easy 2.6-mile (4.2 km) hike along Cedar Creek Falls via Eagle Peak Road, leading you to the impressive 80-foot Cedar Creek Falls. This route, which takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes, involves a gentle descent with only 101 feet (31 metres) of elevation gain on the way down. As you make your way, you'll pass through varied landscapes of oak woodlands, chaparral, and rocky sections, offering striking views of the river valley. Keep an eye out for black oak, cedar, and cottonwood trees, making it a pleasant spot for birdwatching. While the descent is easy, be prepared for a consistent uphill climb on your return journey from the falls.

Before you head out, remember that a permit is required for this trail; you can obtain one through the recreation.gov website. The area is known for extreme heat, particularly from May through November, so it is strongly advised to carry at least one gallon of water per person. You should also avoid hiking on especially hot days to ensure your safety. Accessing the trailhead via Eagle Peak Road involves driving on a narrow, winding dirt road, though it is typically passable for most vehicles.

The highlight of this route is undoubtedly the Cedar Creek Falls, which cascades into a natural swimming hole at its base, offering a refreshing destination. Beyond the main falls, during years with ample rainfall, you might also catch a glimpse of the seasonal 300-foot Mildred Falls. The diverse plant life along the trail also makes it a great location for observing local bird species, adding another layer to your outdoor experience.

Embark on the San Diego River Gorge Trail, a moderate hike spanning 5.6 miles (9.0 km) with an elevation gain of 1123 feet (342 metres). This route takes about 2 hours and 47 minutes to complete, offering a rewarding journey through the backcountry hills of eastern San Diego. You will experience rolling hills and expansive views of valleys and mountains. The trail is shaded by black oak, cedar, and cottonwood trees, making it a good spot for bird watching. Your efforts are rewarded at Cedar Creek Falls, an 80-foot waterfall that plunges into a pool known as "Devil's Punchbowl."

Before you go, know that a permit is required to access the Cedar Creek Falls Permit Area, and you will need to sign in at the trailhead. It is best to hike this trail during cooler months, such as spring and fall, to avoid extreme heat. Temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit can make the route unsafe, so always carry at least a gallon of water per person and some salty snacks. Proper planning ensures a safe and enjoyable experience on this challenging route.

The San Diego River Gorge Trail stands out for its unique natural feature, Cedar Creek Falls. While the waterfall is a highlight, be aware that its flow is seasonal, and it may not be active during summer months, potentially leaving the pool stagnant. This trail offers a chance to explore the diverse ecosystem of the Cleveland National Forest, providing a distinct outdoor adventure in the region.
