Pevensey is a lost seaport town, nowadays 1 mile (1.6 km) from the coast. This is where William Duke of Normandy, later known as William the Conqueror, landed in 1066 to confront King Harold of England. Pevensey Castle is the first Norman castle in England and was built on the ruins of a Roman fort.
