Quakenbrück, first mentioned in documents in 1235, is a former castle town and in earlier times served the Diocese of Osnabrück as a security point to the north. Castle guards defended the former episcopal state castle on the Hase with their total of ten castle farms.

Three castle farms have been preserved - on the market square, at Pfaffenstraße 18 and at Mühlenstraße 30. However, they no longer have the appearance and size from the time of the city's defense, when they were equipped with strong defensive towers and had outbuildings.

The Burgmannshof at Pfaffenstraße 18 was named Grothaus'scher Hof after its owner and bears the coat of arms of the Dincklage-Langen family from 1735. The farm, which was built to protect the Great Mill, is probably the oldest two-story half-timbered house preserved; it was later combined with the Elmendorffhof and sold to the Schulenburg family. This and the Grothaus'scher Hof were allod, while all other Burgmannshöfe were fiefs of the Bishop of Osnabrück.
