The local religious community of Merchtem has Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ter-Noodt as its patron saint. Since time immemorial there has been a great veneration of Mary in the religious community. In the church is the 13th century statue of Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ter-Noodt. On special occasions, the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ter-Noodt song is sung in the church.
Every Sunday morning in the month of May there is a pilgrimage "De Weg-Om" through the streets of Merchtem. The last week in the month of May is entirely dedicated to Our Lady (Feestweek). In addition, the foot and bicycle pilgrimages to Scherpenheuvel are also known.

The Merchtem parish church of Our Lady preserves the built-in west tower as its oldest core, probably dating back to the 14th century. The church building had a complex history and underwent various adjustments. The last major restoration campaign took place in the last decades of the 20th century, after part of the vault collapsed during works in 1969 and the church remained closed for twenty years.
