The thermal water is surface water from the post-glacial period, which sank into granite layers at depths of 2,500 to 3,000 meters. After warming to approximately 120°C, it reemerges above ground at 35-41°C after a circulation period of between 7,500 and 12,000 years. Thermal springs, whose therapeutic healing properties were already known in ancient times, were also popular in medieval Germany.
