The monument stands on Martiron Square, also called the Square of the Four Martyrs. The Tesseron Martiron church on the east side of the square is also named after them. The monument in the square shows Kostas Giampoudakis, the famous explosives master of Arkadi Monastery.

Kostas Giampoudakis was the protagonist of self-sacrifice at Arkadi Monastery and was from the village of Adele. On November 9, 1866, 15,000 Turks were ready to invade the monastery when Giampoudakis asked the Abbot Gavriil Marinakis for permission to set fire to the powder store and he blew it up, giving the Greeks a glorious death to avoid being killed by the enemy to be captured.
