"Dä Geldersche Wend" has long been a proverb used by the residents of the surrounding villages to this day. Ironically, the Geldrian should be declared a show-off, a know-it-all, and a bon vivant. This popular belief is also expressed in the song by the poet Schäng Kox, which is on a plaque next to the statue.

The text about the Geldersche Wend by Schäng Kox (1901-1988) should really say it all (if only one could understand it). But what is this supposed to tell us:

“Dä Wend dor van Stroole
on ok dä van Veert
van Issum on Nieukerk
dän es all nex wert.
Et träckt so van oder
eck glöv ganz bestemmt
van Daag es an t waije
dä Geldersche Wend!”

We can do everything except speak High German, or what? And; who is truly proficient in these words?

"Dä Geldersche Wend" (The Geldern Turn) is an expression used by residents of surrounding villages since ancient times, and still used today.

It was meant to ironically portray the "Geldrianer" (resident of Geldern) as a braggart, a know-it-all, and a conceited person. This common perception is also expressed in the song by the local poet "Schäng Kox" and is to be brought to life through a folksy, personified work of art.

This sculpture was created as a model by Mr. Wilhelm Hoselmann.
