Around 850, Bishop Altfrid and his siblings founded a women's monastery in Essen, which was one of the outstanding religious institutions for women in the German Empire in the early and high Middle Ages. The first collegiate church was built by 870. After several destructions, the fourth church building now stands on this spot. In the course of secularization, the monastery was abolished in 1803 and the Minster church became the parish church for downtown Essen. With the founding of the diocese of Essen in 1958, it was finally promoted to the cathedral church of the Bishop of Essen.
