It was originally called the "German Church" because it was intended for the many German-speaking immigrants and soldiers of the garrison.
To this day, it remains the only garrison church outside of Copenhagen,
and one of the pastors is specifically responsible for the soldiers stationed in Fredericia.

St. Michaeliskirche was a garrison church right from the start - and still is, because one of the pastors of the church is a garrison pastor and thus pastor for the soldiers on duty in Fredericia.
