"As one of the oldest railways in western Germany, the main line of the Bergisch-Märkische Railway from Elberfeld via Hagen and Witten to Dortmund was opened in 1848/49.

The construction of the railway, in particular the "Central Workshop" of the Bergisch-Märkische Railway built in 1863, gave the city of Witten a strong development impulse.

The first Witten train station was at ground level at track level on Herbeder Strasse.

The current reception building, including the platforms, which is a listed building, was put into operation in 1901.

What is the historical significance of Witten Hauptbahnhof beyond its function as a railway station?

Witten Hauptbahnhof is a protected monument and a key part of The Industrial Heritage Trail (Route Industriekultur). Its history is deeply intertwined with the industrial development of the Ruhr region, particularly through the Bergisch-Märkische Railway. The station's construction and subsequent upgrades, including the raising of the railway system in 1901 to remove crossings, significantly shaped Witten's growth as a railway junction for coal, steel, and other industries.

How long should I plan for a visit to Witten Hauptbahnhof to appreciate its features?

If you're primarily interested in the station's historical aspects, such as the preserved steam locomotive "Friedrich" and the accompanying picture gallery in the reception hall, a visit of 30 minutes to an hour should suffice. Are there any organized historical tours of Witten Hauptbahnhof or its immediate surroundings?
