From 1797 until his death in 1816, Duke Frederick II—from 1806 as the first King of Württemberg—residened in Ludwigsburg every summer. During this time, he completely redesigned the eastern surroundings of the palace. In the middle of the wilderness, surrounded by steep cliffs, stood the opera house built under Duke Carl Eugen, which was connected to the palace by the so-called Brückenweg (Bridge Path), a wooden walkway spanning the gorge. Frederick had the opera house demolished, the area filled in, and the bridge replaced by a dam.
