    Especially at a time when forces are striving for power that want to turn the German "culture of remembrance" on its head (and probably set up memorials for "fallen heroes" instead of the victims), it is important to preserve the existing memorials to the atrocities to protect the past and also to use it to remember the suffering that these forces have already brought to Europe!

    1,100 men and women were housed in the Saure Wiesen forced labor camp. On the initiative of the Bochum artist Marcus Kiel, a memorial was created here in 2012. This includes five stones with quotes from forced labourers, four steles with information and a replica of the roll call area.
    The quotes come from the book "...and we carry the memory in our hearts. Letters from former forced laborers - Bochum 1942 to 1945", published by Waltraud Jachnow, Sabine Krämer, Wilfried Korngiebel, Susanne Slobodzian for the "Compensation Now" initiative in 2002 became.
