The mountain takes its name from the three crosses, originally made of wood and now made of metal, placed on it. Although the road to reach it is in the territory of Ventoso, Monte delle Tre Croci is part of San Ruffino.

These crosses are presumed to have existed before the 17th century. The mountain was the destination of processions of the parishioners of San Ruffino during the Easter celebrations. The inhabitants of the neighboring parishes could join the procession only with the authorization of the parish priest.
