On the River Fearle, Listowel is a historical market town with a literary heritage. Listowel Castle was built in the 15th century and open to the public as a national monument.

Standing proudly over the River Fearle is Listowel Castle. It was built in the 15th century and still looks formidable, even though only two of its four towers remain today. The Seanchaí Literary Centre next door houses more information about the castle, as well as a cafe. Pronounced 'shan-a-key', Seanchaí is the art of storytelling and the centre is a museum of words. One entry fee covers both the Seanchaí Literary Centre and a guided tour of the castle.
