The Landes Gascogne forest is a very extensive forest area. It is the largest artificial forest in Europe. It is mainly exploited for maritime pine. However, this forest still shelters areas of natural origin with mixed forests (deciduous and coniferous).
If it has an important economic role today, it was initially thought to hold back the mobile dune of the coast which threatens the coastal villages.
