Up here you can marvel at the number of wonderful witch rings on the Nussenberg plateau. They show up as dark discolorations on the lawn surface.

Witch rings can show up in lawns in a variety of forms. Within the dark circles, the grasses are often dying off. This can be caused by different pathogens. What they all have in common is that the mushroom mycelium spreads out in a ring shape in the soil, leaving behind the typical rings. The mycelium often grows deep into the soil. The annular die-off zone dries up and is water-repellent. Witch rings can appear on lawns year-round. The fungus lives on the organic matter in the soil. The grasses are not directly attacked.

Some grasses will die off due to a lack of water and sometimes toxic decomposition products from the fungi. Older lawns that are matted on the surface are particularly affected. The witch ring fungi live in and from this felt, waiting for favorable conditions to spread.
