Classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998, the boat lifts on the Canal du Center have not been modified since their commissioning. In addition, the site of the Houdeng-Aimeries canal bridge is truly exceptional and not to be missed.

The Strépy-Thieu boat lift lies on a branch of the Canal du Centre in the municipality of Le Rœulx, Hainaut, Belgium. With a height difference of 73.15 metres (240.0 ft) between the upstream and downstream reaches, it was the tallest boat lift in the world upon its completion, and remained so until the Three Gorges Dam ship lift in China was completed in January 2016.

Inaugurated at the beginning of the 2000s, the Strépy-Thieu cable car is one of the finest technological feats of modern Belgian civil engineering. Located in the heart of the European river network, this building with its titanic dimensions allows the new generations of barges to bridge a height difference of 73.15 meters, making it the largest boat lift in Europe!
