Pillboxes like this one began to be constructed after the fall of France to German forces in 1940. Faced with the risk of invasion, an emergency program was initiated, and a military camp was set up here.
This pillbox has a Type 24 design, and its rear wall is longer than the other five sides.

There's a few of these running both ways towards Minehead and Blue Anchor.
With the walls covered with cobbles, they are hard to see against the shingle bar at the top of the beach.
Their position meant there was no cover for anyone attempting a landing over the flats.
