It was built between 1602 and 1604 by Dirick Lindingk and, from 1851, served as the headquarters of the independent Schiffergelag (shipmen's guild), the successor to the Merchants' and Seamen's Guild founded in 1420.
The left part of the building housed the city road, which was important for trade, until the late 19th century. The city's weighmaster and bridgemaster lived here. He was responsible for weighing goods and, together with the Schiffergelag, for collecting the "Pfahlgeld" (pile money) -
ship berthage fees.
