The monument commemorates the Scottish inventor of the steam engine, James Watt (1736-1819). It was created in 1832 based on a design by the British sculptor Francis Leggatt Chantrey. The Statue of James Watt occupies a prominent position on the south-west corner of George Square in central Glasgow. The bronze sculpture shows James Watt seated.
