Triacastela was a modest stopover on the early Camino built around a 9th century monastery. The shape of the village follows the pilgrimage road. On the lower Rua Mayor is an interesting St. James' church with a Romanesque choir extension from the 11th century. At the end of the village is a memorial for pilgrims. The name of the village is said to refer to three castles.
Leaving Triacastela, pilgrims took a stone from the neighboring quarry and carried it to the lime kilns in Arzua, helping to build the cathedral in Santiago
