Surprisingly little is known about the origins of the Count's Castle of Diez, considering the influence the county had in the High Middle Ages. The foundation stone is believed to have been laid in the 11th century. At that time, a Franconian military station had probably existed for several centuries, protecting the important Lahn ford. After many centuries of eventful history, the castle still towers over the old town of Diez and is something of a landmark of the city on the Lahn.

The castle, with its gables and battlements standing steeply above the old town, dominates the silhouette of Diez. Although it is so close to the sky, it seems gloomy and melancholic. Is this still due to the former residents? The count's castle was once a prison in the age of iron balls and chains.
Today it is used as a youth hostel and a historical museum
