The bridge over the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal forms an important link in the fast and safe bicycle connection between the old and new city. Cyclists go up 9 meters in a wide curve through the park, before crossing over the roof of the primary school gymnasium to the other side of the canal. The route continues with a panoramic view of the canal, which is not obstructed by buildings at any point. The bridge's braided cables form a slender gateway to the new city. The bridge forms a whole with the surrounding landscape.

The Dafne Schippersbrug uniquely integrates a bicycle and pedestrian bridge with a primary school and a park into one coherent whole. The new connection between the historic city center of Utrecht and the new residential area Leidsche Rijn leads cyclists and walkers across the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal via the roof of the school. Due to the double use of land and the optimal integration of program components, the Dafne Schippers Bridge has become an icon for the city of Utrecht and the Dutch approach to sustainable cycling infrastructure.
