Often overlooked as a passing place on the way to Mont St-Michel, this village in Manche, Normandy has quite a history.

The village was held by the German army in February 1944, and would have suffered many more losses if it weren't for the work of a German solider who could act as a translator.

On the 1st of August, 1944, George Smith Patton's VIII Corps crossed the Pontaubault bridge into Brittany following the success of Operation Cobra.

The Pontaubault bridge is a magnificent work of art, the construction of which dates back to the 15th century. The eleven arches span the Sélune at the level of the town of Pontaubault. This bridge was bombed several times during World War II, but it resisted, allowing 100,000 men and 1,500 vehicles to cross. A commemorative plaque recalls, perhaps in a slightly exaggerated way, that "the fate of war lay on this bridge".
